Greetings, This question has come about from a recent course.

You are a crew member on a cruiser and have been tasked to put a fix on the chart at 1000. You have found some conspicuous landmarks to use and noted them down in the log. You spend a few minutes practicing taking the bearings quickly with your hand bearing compass and are happy with the task. The mate gave you the latest deviation card for the boat and you worked out that the deviation for the course you will be steering is 8ºE and you can see from the chart that variation for the area was 8º 25' west in 2008 changing 7'east every year - it is now 2024

The mate comes up with you and has said they will write the bearings down for you. You give them the following.

Church spire                     269ºM
RHS of pier                        300ºM
Isolated danger mark      238ºM
(The Gear)

Now all you have to do is convert the magnetic bearing to true bearings so you can plot them on the chart.

My thoughts next week .....
