Greetings.

This question came about from what became a heated discussion in the local marina cafe on what was essentially COLREGS rule 6 and another piece of legislation between a gig crew and a small group of jet skiers. I need to stress that it was not because they had done anything wrong, the question was asked as part of a general discussion about transiting in open water and narrow inlets between Gigs, powerboats, sailing vessels, hovercraft and jet skis. COLREGS rule 6 is all about safe speed.

List all the elements that COLREGS rule 6 require you to think about when deciding how to proceed. What is the other piece of legislation that could apply particularly to the jet skiers in this instance?

My thoughts next week
