As I said, my students had a wide ranging set of answers and were surprised by my answers.
Since we are based in the UK - A UK mile is 1609.34m |
A Chinese mile is 500m |
A Scandinavian mile is 10 km |
A nautical mile is 1852m |
Without getting into the earth being oblate and great circles.
The traditional definition of a nautical is 1 minute of arc subtended at the earths surface commonly known as approximately 2000 yards. In 1929 it was officially given the exact distance of 1852m
